Cash from Keywords

The fact that people looking to spend money use particular words and phrases in the search engines has given these “keywords” a value in this age of information. For example, if someone types in the keyword “injury compensation attorney” into a search engine they are likely to be looking for a lawyer who could help them win compensation for an injury of some kind. In many such cases the courts award substantial payouts and a percentage of this award goes to the lawyers. When we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars and often millions then even if the lawyer takes 20% they are still onto a huge fee if they win the case and get the business in the first place.

” I am always amazëd at the response I receive from people when they find out what I do. When I explain that I own Site-Reference which publishes articles on marketing, website development, and search engine optimization, invariably they get a little gleam in their eye at search engine optimization and ask – “So you could get my website to the top of Google, right?” Yeah, something like that.

Now I would nevër call myself an SEO – I simply do not have the patience for it. Besides, being a professional SEO is starting to take on a distinction that was once held primarily by lawyers (see StuntDubl’s SEO’s and Lawyers post). The problem with SEO’s is that there are far too many people who liberally take on the title, and few too many people who are actually real SEO’s. The further problem is that a bad SEO can do far more damage than if you were to do nothing at all.

Google is without a doubt the world’s number one search engine. According to the research firm Neilsen/NetRatings, Google’s share of the global search market in February 2006 was 48.5%, more than double the 22.5% share its nearest rival Yahoo saw. Having been the engine of choice for nearly five years, Google is synonymous with search. Because Google is the first thing most folks think of when they think about search, it is the most important search marketing venue, at least for the vast majority of SEOs.

Google Algorithm Problems

Have you noticed anything different with Google lately? The Webmaster community certainly has, and if recent talk on several search engine optimization (SEO) forums is an indicator, Webmasters are very frustrated. For approximately two years Google has introduced a series of algorithm and filter changes that have led to unpredictable search engine results, and many clean (non-spam) websites have been dropped from the rankings. Google updates used to be monthly, and then quarterly.
